THOUGHT
I have attended church since I was a child. But it was not until I became involved in church leadership that I truly began to understand the meaning of the word “steward.”
In some churches, “Steward” is an official position — someone with the authority to help manage operations, finances, and membership matters. But in a broader, more spiritual sense, a steward is anyone responsible for the care and well-being of others — spiritually, physically, emotionally, or communally.
Think about it: as a mother, I am a steward of my home and my children. As a business owner, I am a steward of my company and its clients. As a student, I am responsible for the lessons I have learned and using my knowledge to serve my community.
A Pastor, is a steward too— anointed by God to lead the church for God’s glory. And the Pastor does not do it alone. They appoint or work with others — from janitors to ministry leaders — who share in that responsibility. Every person serving in the church, whether selected, anointed, or appointed, becomes responsible for supporting God’s mission: to meet the spiritual, emotional, and physical needs of God’s people.
Early on, I used to think people were chosen for church leadership based mostly on personal relationships or what benefits they brought — financially or socially. And maybe sometimes that was true. But ultimately, who am I to judge how God chooses His stewards?
Unlike in the secular world, there is rarely a resume, application, or interview process for serving God. With God, it is about transformation — from flawed to faithful. And let us be honest: humans are definitely flawed.
Just look at Jesus’ disciples: Peter denied Him. Matthew was a tax collector who worked for the enemy. Thomas doubted everything that Jesus said. James and John jockeyed for power. Judas betrayed Him. Yet, these same flawed men were chosen to carry the message of Christ to the world.
So how does God choose who will lead, teach, and manage His house?
That is God's business.
As believers, we walk by faith. We trust that our leaders are listening to God when they appoint others. And we pray that those chosen to serve are:1. Grounded in the Word and walking as disciples of Christ.2. Trustworthy and committed to caring for both the church and its people.3. Willing to learn, humble enough to admit what they do not know, and wise enough to seek the truth.4. Committed to honoring God's name through their behavior and service.5. Fully aware that it is God, not man, who has entrusted them with this sacred responsibility.
And then, we pray. We pray, that the Spirit of God be magnified in them as they serve.
